Overview:

It’s often said that CEOs are hired for their intellect and fired for their lack of emotional intelligence (EQ). Harnessing Your EQ for Leadership and Success provides professionals with a practical, evidence-based framework for understanding and developing emotional intelligence across four interconnected components: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Drawing on the work of Daniel Goleman, neuroscience research, and real-world leadership applications, this course explores how EQ shapes performance, culture, resilience, and trust.

Course Content:

The course includes five modules, building a complete and practical framework for developing emotional intelligence in leadership and professional life:

  • Module One introduces emotional intelligence, its definition, and its relevance to modern leadership. Drawing on Goleman's four-component framework, the module explains what EQ is, what it is not, and why it matters. It explores the research showing that EQ is among the top ten most in-demand workplace skills and that highly emotionally intelligent professionals earn significantly more on average. The module also examines current trends shaping EQ development, globalization, social media, the pandemic, and the rise of artificial intelligence.
  • Module Two explores self-awareness as the foundation of all other EQ components. Two categories of self-awareness are examined: internal awareness, covering values, passions, thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, and external awareness, covering how others perceive us. The module explains how stress triggers the brain and erodes emotional intelligence, introduces Goleman's concept of the performance sweet spot, and examines how self-awareness supports resilience and wellbeing. Maslow's hierarchy of needs and Eurich's self-awareness matrix are introduced as reflective tools.
  • Module Three moves into self-management, exploring what happens when self-awareness is not enough and emotional regulation is required. The sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems are explained in accessible terms, and Siegel's window of tolerance is introduced as a framework for understanding our reactions. The module addresses the importance of distinguishing between reacting and responding, and Goleman's six self-management leadership competencies. Practical tools including mindfulness, meditation, and the seven pillars of self-care are presented.
  • Module Four addresses social awareness, the ability to sense how others feel and why. Goleman's three social awareness competencies: empathy, organizational awareness, and service, are examined in depth. The iceberg model of empathy is introduced to illustrate the hidden dimensions of human behaviour, and the module explores how values alignment between individuals and organizations shapes culture and engagement. Empathy burnout and the risks of distraction are addressed as important counterbalances to a purely outward focus.
  • Module Five brings the framework together through relationship management, the most complex component of EQ. The module covers trust-building, inspiring and influencing others, conflict management, and the connection between relationship management and employee retention. The thirteen factors of psychological health and safety are discussed as the regulatory context for EQ in the workplace. A leadership case study concludes the course with an opportunity to integrate and reflect on all four components.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completing this course, you should be able to:

  • Define emotional intelligence and explain why it is a stronger predictor of professional performance and leadership effectiveness than technical expertise alone.
  • Describe the two types of self-awareness and apply self-assessment tools and reflection practices to identify personal strengths, triggers, and growth areas.
  • Explain the role of the nervous system and the window of tolerance in emotional regulation and apply self-management strategies to maintain peak performance under stress.
  • Define social awareness and apply the principles of empathy, organizational awareness, and alignment of values to build stronger workplace relationships.
  • Identify the key competencies of relationship management, including trust-building, conflict management, and inspiring others, and explain their connection to employee retention and organizational culture.
  • Recognize the regulatory and organizational dimensions of psychological health and safety and describe how EQ integration supports a healthy and compliant workplace.
