Overview:

Every conference hall, inbox, and leadership meeting is full of promises including new technologies, bold innovations, and tools that claim to transform your business overnight. But how do you know which ones will? Disruption or Distraction equips professionals with frameworks, instincts, and analytical tools to tell the difference. Drawing on real business case studies and proven strategic methodologies, this course explores how disruptions permanently reshape industries, how distractions quietly drain resources and focus, and how smart leaders navigate both with confidence. From Kodak to Trader Joe's, from Theranos to Warby Parker, the lessons are vivid, practical, and immediately applicable to any organization.

Course Content:

The four-module course builds a complete framework for navigating change in the modern business environment:

  • Module One introduces the foundational distinction between disruptions and distractions. Disruptions are transformative, often permanent shifts that reshape industries and competitive landscapes. Think of things like cloud computing, the Sears catalogue, or direct-to-consumer mattress sales. Distractions, by contrast, divert attention and resources without delivering lasting value. The module examines five key dimensions: impact, timing, frequency, response required, and longevity, to help learners begin developing a practical lens for discerning disruption from distraction.
  • Module Two moves into the active work of identifying, assessing, and responding to disruptions. Learners explore a range of scanning tactics organized by effort level, from social listening and expert networks to scenario planning and risk assessment. Eight dimensions for evaluating disruption potential are introduced, alongside tools including the BCG Matrix and BDC Disruptive Change Matrix. The module concludes with four response strategies: ignore, lead, adapt, or compete, and examines the risks of both inaction and premature adoption.
  • Module Three focuses on distractions and their costs. Shiny Object Syndrome (SOS) is examined as the defining paradigm of business distraction, with case studies drawn from Google Glass, Theranos and Walgreens, and Trader Joe's. Learners explore the organizational vulnerabilities that allow distractions to flourish including FOMO, short-term thinking, and weak strategic alignment. Learners leave with practical strategies for recognizing and overcoming them.
  • Module Four equips learners with tools for evaluating change and building a technology strategy. Frameworks including the Hedgehog Concept, the Innovation Ambition Matrix, the Jobs to be Done Framework, and the Lean Startup Methodology provide structured approaches to anchoring decisions in core competencies. The module concludes with a practical introduction to using AI tools, including ChatGPT and Claude.ai, to identify and evaluate disruptions and distractions in any industry context.
