Session #1 Federal Budget Update 2025 | November 10, 2025 | 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Covering the Federal governments’ 2025 budgets, this session will identify and explore some of the tax, planning and fiscal implications. Attend this seminar to learn what changes have been announced in these budgets related to taxes and government .

Session #2 Unexpected Taxation in a Registered Plan | December 10, 2025 | 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Registered plans (such as RRSPs, RRIFs, RESPs, RDSPs, TFSAs and FHSAs) are a common savings vehicle for Canadians. Generally, income and capital gains earned within a registered plan are not subject to taxation in Canada. However, in some circumstances, registered plans and their plan holders may be subject to tax. This session will explore the tax consequences arising from holding non-qualified investments and prohibited investments in a registered plan.

Session # 3 US Tax Considerations for Canadian Tax Practitioners | January 14, 2026| 10:00 am - 11:30 am

This session provides an overview of US Personal and Corporation taxation from a Canadian perspective. The session discusses key considerations for Canadian individuals and businesses that may have an obligation to file a US tax return when working, living or doing business in the US. Participants will have a better understanding of US tax concepts, high-level differences in the taxation between the two countries, and how the tax treaty may apply.

Session #4 Exploring the Amended General Anti-Avoidance Rule (GAAR) | February 11, 2026 | 10:00 am - 11:30 am

The general anti-avoidance rule (“GAAR”) has become a frequent issue for taxpayers and their advisors. Cases involving the GAAR are being litigated more than ever before. This session will explore the framework of the newly amended GAAR. Participants will explore the underlying statutory provision, along with the relevant case law.

SHANE ONUFRECHUK, FCPA, FCA, is a Partner, Tax at KPMG LLP. Shane's focus in the firm is in the area of Canadian Corporate Tax with an emphasis on PPP project finance structuring, corporate reorganizations, acquisitions and providing tax advisory services to other professionals. Shane speaks at CPABC PD events, plays an active role in CPABC professional development, and had been involved in teaching and course development for the CPA Western School of Business as well as the Sauder School of Business.

Tony Zhang, BBA, JDTax Lawyer, Borden Ladner Gervais LLP

TONY ZHANG, BBA, JD, works at Borden Ladner Gervais LLP as tax lawyer. He advises clients on corporate income tax matters arising from domestic and cross-border transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, financings, divestitures and reorganizations. Tony also advises on tax issues that affect various types of investment funds, including domestic and offshore hedge funds, private equity funds, exchange traded funds (ETFs), mutual funds, pooled funds and alternative funds. He has experience with fund launches, reorganizations, acquisitions, ongoing tax compliance and the use of derivative trading strategies. Tony also advises owner-managers and closely held companies on succession and tax planning matters, and also represents taxpayers in their disputes with provincial and federal tax authorities.
